Mierop Design is an award-winning landscape design/build business based in downtown Montclair, New Jersey. We offer a complete range of design and contracting services to add beauty and value to your home - from perennial garden planning to complete landscape makeovers.

Guiding clients from the planning stages through the supervised execution of each phase of design, construction and installation, Mierop Design specializes in the elegant balance of both the functional and aesthetic aspects of outdoor space.  Working with the attributes of your home and property, Mierop Design integrates existing structures with new additions in an effort to create natural, un-contrived landscapes that look as if they have always been there.

Lush mixed plantings and exuberant contrasts of color and texture mark the style, creating beauty in every season while addressing the competing needs of pets, children, outdoor entertaining and privacy.

Mierop Design is also unique in offering two additional services: Pavillion Outdoor Furnishings, an outdoor decorating service to guide you through the purchase of outdoor furnishings and ornaments, including the procurement of fine garden antiques and statuary, and The Landscape Guild a maintenance service to keep your new garden looking its best in every season.

Based in Montclair, Mierop Design is owned and operated by Lisa Mierop.  Beginning with a few commissions in the mid-1990s, the demand for Lisa’s work quickly led to the opening of Mierop Design in 1998.  In 2003, Mierop Design opened a design studio at 120 Walnut Street where clients can peruse portfolios of her work, access her library of references and view samples of furniture, ornaments and antiques to enhance outdoor living.

Lisa’s work was awarded the Grand Prize Golden Trowel Award from Garden Design Magazine in December 1995, and has been singled out for praise in publications including “The Garden Design Book”, New Jersey Monthly Magazine, The Montclair Times and “Natural Landscapes” by noted English designer, John Brookes.  Lisa has a bachelor’s degree in Art History from Wellesley College and certificates in both Gardening and Landscape Design from The New York Botanical Garden. She is a member of ASLA (The American Association of Landscape Architects) and APLD (The Association of Professional Landscape Designers).

Letter from Lisa Mierop

"Your outdoor room is the biggest room you own. It needs to be considered as carefully and consciously as any interior space, requiring all the same considerations of beauty and function."

Lisa Mierop

After a lifetime in Manhattan apartments, I moved to Montclair in 1987. I arrived with a lot of available time, no family responsibilities and no driver’s license, which made adjusting to suburban life rather awkward. For New Yorkers, creating a home is something done behind doors and windows, but life in this community had other plans for me. Desperately seeking something to do, I decided to try gardening, and one weekend for the first time, I planted a bed of flowers.

I spent the rest of the season watching those flowers grow, consumed by their care and beauty. I was a ready convert. When my new kitchen was renovated soon afterwards, a picture window was installed over the sink that framed a view of the backyard.

Unfortunately it was a sorely neglected sight, full of weeds and so shady I wasn’t sure what would grow. But with my new interest in gardening and a beginner’s naive enthusiasm I was determined to improve the view. A few years and many tons of moss rocks and topsoil later, my backyard became a place of calm and color, lush with flowering shrubs and romantic shady walkways.

With the completion of my own garden, I entered an amateur design competition sponsored by Garden Design Magazine. Months later, the surprising word came: I’d won the Grand Prize Golden Trowel Award. Photos of my garden were published along with my story in 1995. The following months brought a flurry of additional write-ups in publications and I started getting small commissions for my work. My business was born.

Over the next years I grew from designing small perennials gardens to taking on full architectural projects. I opened my own full service landscape design/build firm in 1998 and by 2003, I added a design studio in the Walnut Street Business District, one of Montclair’s quickly gentrifying destinations. At the studio, clients can relax while they review portfolios; examine proposals, product samples and even shop for furniture, lighting and garden ornaments – all in a comfortable, home-like atmosphere.

Fortunately, when it comes to the business of making gardens, I am not alone in my passion. The emphasis placed on outdoor living has boomed in the last decades. Gardens have become an integral element of gracious living, as much a part of coming home as a comfortable sofa or a beautiful new kitchen. I always tell my clients that the garden is their biggest room, and the creation of a lovely home can never be complete until a beautiful landscape surrounds it.

I thank you for your interest in Mierop Design and look forward to helping you transform your property and realize your landscape dreams.

Before & After

"Reimagining and building a landscape not only changes your property, it changes how you live. It opens doors from the inside out."

"Word of mouth has carried my business for nearly twenty years. There is no better recommendation than the praise and gratitude of a satisfied client."

“Mierop Design performed a miracle-our once unusable backyard and deck was transformed to a beautiful place to gather. Lisa tackled a very challenging project with vision and determination and it surpasses what we had hoped for. She has unique ideas yet is very practical in choosing perennials and shrubs, which means that we ended up with wonderful plants that are not too finicky. Lisa was sensitive to our taste and respected our wishes to be as ‘green’ as possible. Working with Lisa was a pleasure and I highly recommend Mierop Design without reservations.”

“Lisa I wanted to thank you, Frank, and the amazing crew for making our home look so beautiful. It’s not just beautiful, it’s functional, which was my main goal. We park our cars in the back and side now – no more moving four cars every morning! We’ve received so many wonderful comments about the work. It was a very big project and we are very happy with the outcome!”

“In a suburban community there is never a shortage of businesses offering landscape design services. However, Mierop Design is exceptional and unique. We have worked with Mierop Design for fifteen years both professionally on renovation sites both commercial and residential, and personally at our own home. We completely trust her design input and depend on her timely execution of the plans. Lisa creates landscapes the way a painter fills a blank canvas. The result is a mature garden look on completion. It’s art in open spaces.”

“Lisa Mierop’s work is a reflection of herself – elegant, classy and professional. She is among the best at what she does in northern New Jersey.”

“I must admit that altghough I had a very high expecations for my landscaping project, I did not really know what I ultimately wanted nor did I have a great deal of knowledge on plants, gardens and landscape. I was looking for someone I could really trust to be on top of every element and who would be accountable for the professional, dependable and on top of that – fun to work with on a project. I am thrilled with the results!”
Bonnie Carter

Llewellyn Park, NJ

“We used Lisa to completely redesign our tired, overgrown property. She developed plans for both the landscape and the hardscape as well as conceived a new area for our pool. It was a very complicated project that had to be completed in stages. Lisa has a wonderful aesthetic that is elegant yet natural. Her design perfectly complemented the style of our house. She was easy to work with and very open to our ideas and We highly recommend Lisa Mierop.”

"Landscape possibilities can be overwhelming. My job is to help the client edit choices to arrive at not only what is beautiful, but what is needed to make the space work to its potential."

The Process

"I am often asked about how the design process works..."

….As always it’s about listening and understanding how to balance needs, lifestyle, and tastes with existing site conditions and budget.

Usually we start with a wish list: more privacy, a patio, pool or space for sports activities. Lifestyle and architecture inform the process, but the landform and available sunlight will direct the shape things take.

After existing conditions are assessed, a concept is created that optimizes space while creating beautiful rooms and views.  A Master Plan that allows for the comfortable flow of people, cars and pets is created with continuous client feedback.

Landscape construction can be a daunting spectacle. Earth literally moves, as equipment and crews shift from demolition to refashioning the landform.

Grades are established, drainage is installed, hard surfaces and walls are built as the design begins to take visible form.

Mierop Design operates a proprietary nursery that houses many unique shrubs and perennials specified in the designs.

Soil preparation, planting, mulching and irrigation signal the end of the construction phase.

Exterior decorating adds finishing touches - outdoor furniture, containers, ornaments and other decorations are stylish and make outdoor living comfortable and fashionable. (Link to Pavillion Outdoor)

Finally, every landscape needs seasonal care. Our Landscape Guild gardeners understand proper pruning, staking, plant care as well as troubleshooting disease and insect issues. The also install annuals, seasonal bulbs and specialize in creating container displays. They help keep your new investment at its best.
